Two Latvian men have been released on bail following their arrest at the RAF Molesworth military facility in Cambridgeshire, which is utilized by both the US military and Nato.
The suspects, aged 32 and 26 and residing in the UK, were taken into custody at approximately two in the morning after being found inside the secure perimeter. The security response was triggered hours earlier when military personnel discovered an abandoned vehicle near the site late on Wednesday evening.
Working alongside Cambridgeshire police, military authorities located a small hole in the perimeter fence before apprehending the two individuals inside the installation. Initially detained on suspicion of criminal damage and trespassing on a prohibited site, the men faced subsequent arrests under section four of the National Security Act for entering a restricted location with a purpose deemed prejudicial to the UK.
Authorities have released the pair on strict bail terms while the ongoing inquiry proceeds. Commander Helen Flanagan, heading Counter Terrorism Policing London, acknowledged public sensitivity regarding recent security events at military installations, noting that current findings show no link to a separate incident that occurred near RAF Fairford.
Investigators are maintaining close cooperation with the Ministry of Defence police and local constabulary to establish the motivation behind the intrusion, including potential links to criminal acts. In connection with the probe, law enforcement has executed property searches in the Peterborough area and secured the abandoned vehicle for examination. RAF Molesworth, situated west of Huntingdon, hosts the US Joint Intelligence Operations Center, Europe, alongside Nato's Intelligence Fusion Centre.
