Delhi Police have issued a notice to Congress MP and dismissed Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, directing him to participate in the ongoing investigation regarding a sexual harassment case registered against him. Authorities have instructed Akoijam to report to the police station under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, to present his perspective on the matter.
This legal development follows the university's decision to dismiss Akoijam from his teaching role within the School of Social Sciences after an internal panel investigated multiple complaints. Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur constituency in the Lok Sabha, has denied any wrongdoing and criticized the university's internal committee for what he terms an unfair inquiry process.
A formal police first information report was lodged against Akoijam following a complaint by the chief security officer of JNU, invoking relevant legal provisions concerning sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of a woman. The university action stemmed from complaints brought forward by at least 11 female students in May 2026, leading to his immediate termination from the institution.
The allegations detailed accusations that the professor invited students to his campus home under the guise of academic meetings and attempted to sexually harass them, alongside claims that he made inappropriate remarks during lectures. The university panel sustained the findings of misconduct, prompting the disciplinary dismissal.
Rejecting all accusations, Akoijam characterized the institution's disciplinary actions as a targeted political campaign and contended that he was denied a proper chance to address the committee's conclusions. In media statements, he compared the internal tribunal to an arbitrary assembly and asserted that multiple complaints against him, including those involving male students, were entirely fabricated.
Akoijam further challenged claims that he demanded sexual favors in exchange for academic grades, urging that the assertions be evaluated against official records. As the matter transitions to formal criminal proceedings, law enforcement officials await his appearance to continue the investigation.
