Student and youth activists representing the National Students' Union of India and the Youth Congress recently addressed a press conference in Delhi alongside senior political figures, alleging severe police brutality, torture, and illegal detention during recent demonstrations. Detainees, including female students from Delhi University, described physical assaults by law enforcement personnel inside detention buses and police stations, highlighting specific instances of beatings and injuries sustained near Connaught Place.

Leadership figures condemned the authorities for orchestrating arbitrary detentions, utilizing makeshift lockups near Rajiv Chowk, and suppressing peaceful democratic protests across the national capital. Activists and participants were urged to retain video documentation of any official high-handedness to support future legal action against perceived abuses of power.

Simultaneously, the Delhi Police has escalated a separate legal matter by issuing a formal notice to Congress Member of Parliament and former Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Bimol Akoijam, directing him to participate in an active investigation. The summons, issued by the Vasant Kunj North Police Station under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, requires the parliamentarian to present his response to the allegations before investigating authorities.

This police action follows the registration of a First Information Report based on formal complaints accusing the MP of sexual harassment, making sexually offensive remarks, and engaging in inappropriate conduct. The case has driven considerable political friction, highlighted by Bharatiya Janata Party women parliamentarians previously meeting with President Droupadi Murmu to demand official measures against the Congress lawmaker.
