New Delhi: The Congress on Monday attacked the central government over rising prices during the festive season, alleging that inflation has spiraled out of control and is heavily burdening poor and middle-class families. The opposition party stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must answer how long citizens will have to endure what it described as a severe economic squeeze.
The party noted that soaring costs have complicated household spending during a period when festive purchases typically increase. While the opposition blamed the administration for implementing anti-people policies, the government has previously defended its economic record by citing gross domestic product figures.
Congress general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh highlighted a media report indicating that climbing festive-season prices were taking a heavy toll on consumers, who are forced to pay significantly higher amounts across multiple product categories.
Writing on social media, Ramesh stated that the public feels suffocated by inflation under the current administration, claiming that price levels have reached historic extremes. He remarked that price increases affecting everything from household kitchens to electronic items are directly draining the resources of ordinary families.
Ramesh pointed out that festive staples such as spices, dry fruits, and sweets have seen steep price hikes. He also noted reports showing a ten to twenty-five percent increase in the cost of household electronics like televisions and refrigerators, alongside kitchenware. Furthermore, he warned that recent monetary policy decisions regarding the repo rate would compound loan and installment burdens.
Describing the situation as a failure of leadership, Ramesh asserted that managing a basic household budget has turned into an ordeal. He accused the prime minister of remaining indifferent to public hardship while focusing on political messaging, and noted that upcoming retail inflation projections by economists suggest rates could climb for the sixth straight month to reach a multi-month high.
