The Punjab Vigilance Bureau apprehended six government officials and two private individuals for allegedly taking bribes across six distinct cases in September, maintaining its drive against public sector corruption. An official spokesperson noted that the bureau additionally submitted chargesheets for 23 vigilance cases in various courts throughout the month.
Judicial authorities convicted six individuals in four separate bribery matters prosecuted by the bureau, handing down prison sentences from two to five years alongside fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000. During the same monthly period, the bureau initiated four criminal cases involving eight suspects—seven of whom were government employees—alongside a disproportionate assets case against another government worker and a separate vigilance inquiry.
This September enforcement follows a broader anti-corruption push that saw 1,107 graft cases registered by the bureau between March 16, 2022, and August 31, 2026. According to the bureau, 1,146 suspects were arrested over that extended timeframe, while courts secured 248 convictions across 154 corruption cases.
The spokesperson emphasized that these measures reflect the Punjab government's strict zero-tolerance approach toward graft. The cumulative figures include 529 trap cases resulting in 638 arrests, 546 criminal cases leading to 492 arrests, and 32 disproportionate assets cases with 16 arrests.
Furthermore, the bureau opened 301 vigilance inquiries during this multi-year window. These investigations comprised 118 inquiries into suspected disproportionate assets and 183 probes addressing various other allegations of corruption.
