Retired FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer has disclosed that she received four ransom emails regarding the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. Coffindaffer stated her belief that these messages originated from individuals attempting to exploit people closely following the high-profile case.

Speaking to NewsNation, Coffindaffer explained that the messages arrived in April. At the time, she chose to remain silent publicly and immediately forwarded the information to the FBI. According to Coffindaffer, federal investigators noted that the bitcoin address listed in the communications did not match the address associated with notes believed to be authentic by investigators.

Coffindaffer decided to break her silence after discovering that Lauren Serpa, a neighbor of Nancy Guthrie, received a comparable communication. Serpa shared details about her message on social media, revealing an image that closely matched the photograph sent to Coffindaffer. This development prompted Coffindaffer to warn the public that bad actors might attempt to target others.

Demanding payment in bitcoin, the messages featured a disturbing picture purporting to show Nancy Guthrie. Coffindaffer suspects the senders operate as an organized group, noting that the messages were delivered to a private email account not publicly available online, despite efforts by her own investigators to trace how the address was obtained.

The communications also incorporated Bible verses tailored to Coffindaffer's devout Catholic faith. Because the bitcoin wallet address differed from the one connected to potential real kidnappers, and due to her vocal public commentary on the investigation, Coffindaffer believes she was specifically targeted. The demands asked for one or two bitcoins, valued around $60,000 each in April and significantly higher since.

Expressing concern for the public, Coffindaffer emphasized that the distressing photograph—which depicted a likeness of Nancy looking injured, with a shaved head, dirt on her face, and a tear—was designed to emotionally manipulate recipients into believing she is alive and that they can assist through a financial contribution. Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her Catalina Foothills residence on January 31, 2026.
