Mumbai: United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Mumbai for high-level bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, marking his second visit to India in five months. Acknowledging India's critical status as the world's most populous nation, largest democracy, and a vital Quad partner, Rubio emphasized the robust growth of the defense and commercial partnership between Washington and New Delhi.

Addressing the state of ongoing trade negotiations during his visit, Rubio noted that the bilateral trade agreement is nearly finalized. He stated that only a small number of items are left to wrap up, expressing optimism that the remaining details will be settled shortly despite previous trade strains and tariff discussions entering the legal drafting stage.

The extensive itinerary also features critical talks on energy security, technology, security cooperation, and critical minerals. Against the backdrop of global supply disruptions across Russia, Ukraine, and West Asia, Washington is pursuing closer coordination with India to help stabilize international crude oil prices. As part of these energy dialogues, Rubio is scheduled to travel to Jamnagar to inspect Reliance Industries' major oil refinery facility, focusing on its capacity to process hard crude oil.

Beyond economic and energy matters, the visit holds strong diplomatic and strategic significance. Rubio paid a solemn tribute at the 26/11 memorial in Mumbai, reaffirming the shared commitment and solidarity of both nations against international terrorism as they look to further expand bilateral alignment.
