A 43-year-old man has been charged following an incident in Victoria state where Australian Member of Parliament Helen Haines was struck by a vehicle. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court to face charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the federal offense of causing harm to a public official.
Local media identified the suspect as environmental activist Brendan Nugent. In a public statement, his father, Rod Nugent, and partner, Christine Cunningham, stated that they had known Haines for more than 20 years, describing her as a respected and deeply loved community member. They extended their thoughts to Haines and her family while pledging full cooperation with Victoria Police.
Police investigators allege the incident was targeted. Haines, the 65-year-old independent representative for Indi, remains in a critical but stable condition at a Melbourne hospital after undergoing surgery. According to reports, she was airlifted following the incident outside her office in Wangaratta, where bystanders rushed to her aid. Officials indicated the driver allegedly struck her twice after performing a U-turn, pinning her between two vehicles.
A local barber recounted intervening during the incident, pulling the suspect from the car and removing a knife from his possession before discarding it. Victoria Police noted that a highway patrol unit was stationed nearby and arrived at the scene within eight seconds of the emergency call. Authorities subsequently executed a search warrant at a property in Tarawingee.
Investigators have characterized the event as an isolated incident with no broader ongoing threats linked to the matter. Meanwhile, community members in Wangaratta have gathered for vigils and left floral tributes outside Haines's main street office as the town processes the shock of the attack.
