French President Emmanuel Macron has declined Interior Minister Laurent Nunez's offer to resign following widespread weekend rioting, according to an announcement from the Elysee presidential office on Monday.

Macron stated that Nunez must remain in his role to ensure that a steady chain of command is maintained across police and security forces. Furthermore, the president has instructed Nunez to formulate and implement new approaches for dealing with looters as quickly as possible.

The recent demonstrations and subsequent violence have been fueled by public frustration over escalating living costs, deteriorating public services, and the current condition of schools.

Nationwide protests devolved into riots on Saturday, resulting in clashes between violent groups and police forces across various cities. During the unrest, a town hall was torched, numerous shops were pillaged, and buildings were defaced with graffiti.

Additional clashes erupted in Paris and Marseille on Sunday, where riot police intervened to thwart ongoing attempts by individuals trying to ransack local businesses.
