New Delhi: Professional tennis player Elina Svitolina has announced the end of her marriage to fellow tennis star Gael Monfils after four years together, revealing the deep personal struggles she has faced amid the ongoing war in her homeland. The Ukrainian athlete shared that she must now work on rediscovering herself outside of her public and private roles as a wife, mother, and competitor.
Svitolina and Monfils tied the knot in July 2021 and welcomed a daughter, Skai, in October 2022. In a statement posted to social media, Svitolina detailed the heavy mental and emotional toll the war in Ukraine has exacted upon her, while expressing gratitude for the unwavering support Monfils provided throughout their difficult times.
The tennis star noted that while they fought together with everything they had, certain internal battles must be fought alone even when supported by deep love. She emphasized that Monfils accepted her decision with remarkable strength and dignity, and stressed that neither person is to blame for the conclusion of their marriage.
Reassuring followers regarding their family dynamic, Svitolina stated that their daughter will always come first and that their shared parenting commitment remains intact despite the end of their marriage. The couple previously experienced a brief separation in early 2021 before reconciling and marrying later that same year.
The announcement coincides with the month of Monfils officially concluding his professional tennis career spanning more than twenty years. Svitolina wrapped up her statement by requesting privacy and understanding as their family navigates this significant life transition together.
