Australian lawmaker Helen Haines was in a critical condition on Monday after being deliberately struck by a car outside her office in Wangaratta. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the attack.
The 65-year-old independent MP was hit outside her electorate office in the regional Victorian town, located roughly three hours northeast of Melbourne, shortly before 4 pm local time on Sunday. Albanese stated that she was subsequently airlifted to a hospital.
A 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee was apprehended at the scene. Police confirmed that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Albanese noted that the motive behind the incident remained unknown and announced that a joint counterterrorism team had been activated. He mentioned receiving a briefing from Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett.
Victoria Police stated that they believe a white Toyota LandCruiser hit Haines outside her Wangaratta office. According to authorities, a passerby detained the suspect after he exited the vehicle. Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason reiterated that the public was no longer at risk.
Haines was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. Investigators are looking into the specifics of the incident, including whether any prior relationship existed between the parliamentarian and the suspect. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke noted that the inquiry remained in its preliminary phases.
Haines' family released a statement confirming that the mother of three was undergoing medical treatment. They expressed gratitude toward the bystanders who rendered aid, the medical personnel providing care, and the police for their swift intervention.
Haines has served as the federal representative for the electorate of Indi since 2019. Burke also pointed to a broader trend involving rising reports of harassment and threats directed at public officials, noting an increase from 951 to 1,067 incidents over the most recent financial year. Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the collision.
