Actor Ranvir Shorey has reported receiving alleged death threats following his public criticism of a street demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janata Party. The actor posted screenshots of the threatening emails on social media platform X and formally requested assistance from both cyber security authorities and the Mumbai Police.
One of the threatening messages, allegedly sent from an account under the name Raj Parihar, featured abusive language and asserted that the sender was monitoring the actor's location and daily movements. The communication further threatened a physical assault against Shorey at a time determined by the sender.
To alert officials, Shorey tagged both Cyber Dost and Maharashtra Cyber in his online post. The Mumbai Police responded quickly, requesting the actor to share his contact information via a direct message. Shorey expressed his appreciation for the rapid response from law enforcement and subsequently lodged an official complaint regarding the intimidation.
The hostile messages surfaced after Shorey publicly challenged the decision of the Cockroach Janata Party to stage a street protest. Via his account on X, the actor contended that political organizations ought to utilize Parliament, electoral ballots, and judicial systems to address grievances instead of disrupting public infrastructure.
Demonstrating numbers in Parliament and at the ballot box rather than taking to the streets was essential, Shorey argued, adding that judicial avenues should be pursued if existing pathways appear unjust. He described taking over public spaces and compromising law enforcement machinery as a true violation of democratic principles.
The controversy stems from a demonstration held by the party at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, which called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over reported discrepancies in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. Concurrently, related demonstrations in Mumbai saw actor Imran Khan among those detained at August Kranti Maidan.
