New Delhi: A physically disabled content creator in Delhi shared a troubling encounter at a metro station where fellow commuters rushed into an elevator, leaving no room for him to enter in his wheelchair despite a designated priority sign.
Tej Beniwal, who documents his daily experiences on Instagram under the handle The Wheelchair Vlogs, captured the incident to highlight the daily accessibility challenges and lack of consideration individuals with disabilities frequently encounter in public environments.
In the footage, Beniwal is seen waiting outside the station lift in his wheelchair. When the doors opened, passengers immediately crowded inside without leaving adequate space for him to board. Even while he waited, individuals stood directly in front of him, prioritizing their own entry.
Beniwal then directed his camera toward the advisory sign above the lift, which explicitly states that priority should be given to senior citizens and people with physical disabilities. Despite the clear guideline, none of the commuters stepped aside or offered him the right of way.
Alongside the post, Beniwal questioned the behavior of the crowd by asking who was truly disabled. The video quickly drew strong reactions online, with viewers criticizing the apparent absence of basic civic sense and common decency in public spaces.
Social media users expressed frustration over the situation, noting that the incident reflects a broader societal issue regarding empathy and accessibility. Commenters voiced disbelief that people could look directly at a wheelchair user and still fail to make room, calling attention to a wider need for compassion and adherence to accessibility rules in India.
