Chennai Stir: Cop Accused of Assaulting Woman Protester, NFIW Demands Action

A woman demonstrator in Chennai has filed a complaint alleging sexual assault by an unidentified male police inspector during a protest at Sivanda Salai. The incident reportedly occurred when she attempted to walk past police barricades during demonstrations organised by student and youth groups against the Special Intensive Revision. According to the complaint, the male officer deliberately groped her as a means of stopping her, causing severe physical pain. The complainant further stated that an on-duty woman police inspector failed to initiate action when approached at the spot. Intervening in the matter, the National Federation of Indian Women lodged a formal complaint with the Chennai City Police Commissioner, demanding the identification of the accused officer and immediate legal action against him. Demonstrations in Tamil Nadu saw widespread detentions across locations such as Besant Nagar, drawing criticism from political parties over excessive police force.
