New Delhi: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has experienced a multifaceted career and educational background. Before entering the Indian Administrative Service, his academic path spanned top positions in Uttar Pradesh board examinations, engineering studies at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and specialized coursework at Harvard University.
Born in 1964 with ties to Agra, Kumar spent his early years studying in Gorakhpur, Lucknow, and Kanpur. Records indicate that he topped the Uttar Pradesh Board examinations for high school in 1979 and for intermediate in 1981. During a return visit to his former institution in Lucknow in August 2026, he reflected on his time in the city as a foundational period of learning.
Following his schooling, Kumar attended IIT Kanpur, graduating with a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering in 1985. His educational pursuits expanded further into business finance through ICFAI and environmental economics at the Harvard Institute for International Development, according to his institutional profile. In November 2025, IIT Kanpur recognized these accomplishments by presenting him with its Distinguished Alumni Award during the 66th Foundation Day celebrations.
Transitioning into the civil services, Kumar joined the 1988 batch of the Indian Administrative Service and was assigned to the Kerala cadre. Throughout his tenure in the state, he held roles such as Municipal Commissioner of Cochin, Managing Director of the Kerala State Cooperative Bank, District Collector of Ernakulam, and Resident Commissioner of Kerala House in New Delhi.
He later moved to central government roles, serving in the Ministry of Home Affairs during significant national policy developments. Following his retirement from active government service at the end of January 2024, Kumar was appointed as an Election Commissioner in March 2024, participating in the oversight of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He subsequently assumed the role of the 26th Chief Election Commissioner of India on February 19, 2025.
