Coimbatore: Ten-year-old Guru Tarun SK is preparing for the biggest race of his life as he represents India in the Under-12 category at the Asia Pacific Motorsport Championship 2026 in Thailand. Selected by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), the young racer's journey began with recreational go-karting at Kartkrew Motorsports and CoASTT Kartmania in Karumathampatti before quickly evolving into an international opportunity.

Tarun was inspired to enter the sport by his father, V Santhosh Kumar, a former rally racer who now acts as his primary guide and mentor. Although Tarun has only been actively involved in go-karting for six months, his strong performance in the IAME Championship earlier in the year caught the attention of national selectors.

To maintain a competitive edge, Tarun follows a rigorous training routine that begins at 6:00 AM daily and includes regular trips to premier tracks in Chennai and Bengaluru. Balancing his racing schedule with academics has required significant travel and time away from school, though his educational institution, SSVM School of Excellence, has provided strong support for his athletic pursuits.

Motorsport remains a demanding and costly discipline, with safety equipment alone requiring substantial financial investment. The sport also carries physical risks, as Tarun has previously recovered from injuries including a fractured arm, an experience his father views as part of the developmental process drawn from his own racing background.

Looking beyond the upcoming championship events spanning Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, Tarun harbors ambitions of advancing to Formula 1 racing. Inspired by British racing driver Lewis Hamilton, the young athlete embraces the high-speed nature of the sport as he builds foundational experience through competitive karting.
