Dubai, Oct 22, 2026 12:40 IST An Indian national sustained injuries during a drone attack directed at the Shaybah oilfield in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, according to officials citing the Press Trust of India. The incident resulted in two fatalities and two additional injuries.

The strike occurred amid a persistent rise in drone and missile operations launched by Yemen's Houthi rebels against key Saudi infrastructure, including energy installations and airports. Although Saudi officials have not publicly attributed blame for this specific strike, the event highlights mounting dangers for foreign expatriates residing near strategic economic sites.

The Indian Embassy in Riyadh announced it was communicating directly with Saudi authorities to gather further information. In an online statement, the embassy confirmed that an Indian citizen was hurt in the oilfield incident and pledged to provide comprehensive support and assistance.

According to the Saudi Ministry of Energy, air defense systems successfully intercepted the incoming drone as it aimed for a facility within the Saudi Aramco Shaybah complex on Wednesday morning. Falling shrapnel from the intercepted aerial vehicle caused two fatalities and two injuries among local residents, while also igniting a fire in a contractor vehicle stationed outside the facility perimeter.

State-run media reported that the official interception and resulting debris did not disrupt ongoing production operations at the oilfield. Casualties included a Filipino national and a Nepali national who died, alongside a Pakistani citizen and the injured Indian national.

Shaybah is a crucial petroleum production hub managed by state-owned Saudi Aramco, situated deep in the Rub' al-Khali desert near the border with the United Arab Emirates. The Houthi movement, which maintains control over substantial territories in northern Yemen, has routinely targeted Saudi territory as part of its ongoing conflict with the internationally recognized Yemeni government and its coalition allies.

This security breach follows an earlier attack this month targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which previously resulted in one Indian fatality and multiple injuries. New Delhi has repeatedly condemned strikes directed against civilian installations and energy infrastructure, urging an immediate halt to regional hostilities.

In response to the escalating security situation, the Indian Embassy has cautioned its citizens across Saudi Arabia to stay vigilant, adhere strictly to local safety directives, and seek shelter during aerial threats. Authorities also warned expatriates against recording or distributing media related to drone interceptions and impact zones due to strict legal penalties under Saudi regulations. Saudi Arabia hosts a significant Indian diaspora numbering approximately 2.74 million people working across various industries.
