Kakinada District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad has directed the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board and the Department of Fisheries to formulate a comprehensive action plan aimed at modernising the Kakinada Fishing Harbour and the Kumbabhishekam fish landing point along the Kakinada coast.

Constructed between 1979 and 1984, the Kakinada Fishing Harbour currently accommodates the landing of more than 4,200 mechanised boats. Meanwhile, the Kumbabhishekam fish landing point, situated between the Kakinada deep-sea port and a mudflat, serves as an important trade center for mechanised vessels engaging in deep-sea fishing. In addition to local vessels, fishing boats originating from the Visakhapatnam and Machilipatnam coasts frequently utilize the Kakinada Fishing Harbour to benefit from superior marketing connectivity and the export of marine fish.

During a review meeting held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the District Collector instructed the relevant agencies to proceed with the modernisation proposals. Officials also noted that the Ameenabad fishing harbour on the Uppada coast, located approximately 10 kilometres from the Kakinada Fishing Harbour, is currently nearing completion.

Key local officials, including Kakinada Port Officer K. Sridharma Sasthra and Kakinada Anchorage Port Superintending Engineer M.B. Padmashreni, have been instructed to provide necessary support for the upgrade initiatives. Furthermore, AP Maritime Board Executive Engineer A.S.S. Prakasa Rao and Assistant Director of Fisheries G. Gopi contributed detailed assessments regarding the operational challenges and advantages associated with the upcoming modernisation strategy.
