Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects, including the launch of a 14.5-kilometre Chennai Metro Rail Phase Two stretch connecting Poonamallee to Vadapalani alongside Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay. The event featured a planned ceremonial metro ride originating from the Porur Bypass station.
The Prime Minister's itinerary extended beyond the transit sector to encompass project launches across national highways, completed railway lines such as the Karaikal-Perambur route, Amrit Bharat station upgrades, and new initiatives in scientific research, ports, and petroleum. His schedule also included visits to a local temple and the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
Chief Minister Vijay personally received the Prime Minister at the Chennai airport before both leaders shared the stage to jointly flag off the new metro section. Large crowds, including approximately 1,100 students dressed in Bharatanatyam attire alongside party supporters and cadres, gathered at the venue to welcome the dignitaries.
The joint public appearance carried notable political significance, marking a shift in Centre-state relations in Tamil Nadu under the new administration following the earlier DMK era. While the state leadership has asserted that regional rights will remain protected, it has simultaneously adopted a cooperative stance with the central government to accelerate infrastructure growth. Observers noted the event followed a meeting between Chief Minister Vijay and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in Chennai just a day prior, ahead of sharing the stage with Prime Minister Modi in accordance with official protocol.
