Mumbai: The Mumbai Police and the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) have served a notice to Bollywood actor Imran Khan, directing the United States national to depart from the country by October 28 or face potential prosecution. The directive states that the 43-year-old actor has allegedly breached provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, along with associated rules and orders.
According to the official communication issued by the Mumbai FRRO, acting under powers conferred by the legislation and Ministry of Home Affairs notifications, Khan has been ordered not to remain in the country past the specified deadline. The notice explicitly warns that failure to comply with the departure order will subject him to legal prosecution under the relevant sections of the Act.
In response to the directive, Khan is preparing to challenge the notice before the Bombay High Court through his legal representation, Zulfikar Memon of MZM Legal. The forthcoming petition is expected to argue that no existing regulation or law bars an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder from engaging in a protest, while describing the expulsion order as overly drastic.
The administrative measures stem from an incident on October 10, when Mumbai Police detained Khan during a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan. The protest targeted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Khan, known for his roles in various Bollywood films and as the nephew of actor Aamir Khan, travels on a US passport and holds an OCI card. The scrutiny surrounding his status intensified after Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya publicly demanded the actor's arrest and deportation, alleging that participation in the agitation violated OCI and visa conditions and submitting related evidence to law enforcement authorities.
