New Delhi: A political controversy has emerged following remarks made by student leaders and civil society figures during a press conference in the national capital. The briefing was originally organized to condemn the recent arrests of Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka, who were detained by authorities after waving the national flag at Jantar Mantar. Organizers also used the platform to announce an upcoming Tiranga Yatra march scheduled to take place at Central Park in Connaught Place.
The Bharatiya Janata Party quickly seized on statements connected to the event, targeting senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The ruling party pointed to a video featuring All India Students' Association president Neha Bora, in which she praised the student-led agitation in Bangladesh. According to the BJP, these comments expose an underlying conspiracy aimed at replicating Bangladesh-style unrest within India to force an unconstitutional regime change and undermine democratic institutions.
In her video message, Bora had remarked that youth across India draw solidarity from the movement that originally erupted in Bangladesh for democratic rights and voting freedoms against religious fundamentalism. The ruling party argued that such rhetoric aligns with broader opposition efforts to destabilize the government.
Adding to the controversy during the same press briefing, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan openly stated that the ongoing struggle spearheaded by students, youth, and civil society members is explicitly designed to protect democracy and achieve regime change. Observers note that Bhushan's remarks provide additional political ammunition for the ruling party's narrative.
Meanwhile, opposition figures and civil society organizers have dismissed the BJP's allegations, characterizing them as an attempt to malign activists and deflect attention away from legitimate public grievances and peaceful demonstrations. Organizers continue to call for widespread public participation in their upcoming events to reclaim public protest spaces in Delhi.
