Kolkata authorities and investigators are examining the series of failures that led to a deadly crowd crush at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal, an incident that claimed 19 lives and left approximately 25 others injured. Following the disaster, law enforcement officials have arrested seven individuals in connection with the event.
Preliminary assessments indicate that a combination of adverse conditions contributed to the catastrophe. Heavy rainfall, confined alleyways, severe overcrowding, insufficient security personnel, and sudden panic among attendees reportedly combined to trigger the deadly surge.
In response to the tragedy, a Special Investigation Team headed by a Calcutta High Court judge has been established to investigate the root causes. Investigators are currently reviewing closed-circuit television footage, mapping entry and exit pathways, and evaluating the specific responsibilities of event organizers, local police, and private security teams.
