Renault India has launched the new Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 at Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom), introducing the brand’s strong-hybrid technology to the Indian market. The SUV delivers a claimed ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29kmpl and a combined driving range of up to 1,400km. Bookings are open for a token amount of Rs 21,000 through Renault’s official website and authorised dealerships. The new hybrid version will compete against the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder in the midsize SUV segment.

The Renault Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 is powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery. The hybrid system produces a maximum combined output of 160bhp, while the electric motor delivers peak torque of 208Nm. Power is managed by an intelligent multi-mode transmission that coordinates the petrol engine and electric motors according to driving conditions.

Renault states that the Duster hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 9.6 seconds. The system allows the SUV to run on electric power under suitable conditions, while regenerative braking recovers energy during deceleration. The battery recharges automatically as the vehicle is driven, eliminating the need for an external charging connection.

The battery features direct refrigerant cooling to regulate its temperature, helping maintain performance and efficiency across varying operating conditions. Renault claims an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29kmpl for the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 along with a combined driving range of up to 1,400km on a full tank of fuel. Actual fuel economy and range will vary depending on factors such as traffic, driving style and road conditions.

The Duster features an MTV-CL suspension setup with Frequency Dependent Damping technology. This suspension configuration is designed to adapt damping characteristics to road inputs, aiming to balance ride comfort over uneven surfaces with stability and control at higher speeds.

The addition of the strong-hybrid powertrain expands the Duster’s engine lineup, which also includes two turbo-petrol options. The entry-level engine is a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit producing 100bhp and 160Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Buyers seeking more performance can opt for the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine, which develops 163bhp and 280Nm of torque. This engine is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

With the introduction of the 1.8-litre strong-hybrid powertrain, the Renault Duster offers buyers a choice between conventional turbo-petrol performance and a hybrid setup focused on fuel efficiency. Its claimed mileage and combined range position it as a competitor against established strong-hybrid SUVs in the midsize segment.
