Microsoft has offered voluntary exits to around 60,000 eligible employees globally. The terms can materially shape benefits and employees' financial decisions.Microsoft on Monday announced a Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) for around 60,000 eligible employees globallyNew Delhi,Oct 27, 2026 12:04 ISTMicrosoft’s voluntary exit buyout has brought attention to how employees should evaluate severance packages before deciding to leave their jobs.
Software engineer Shubh Jain, who posts on X as @shubh19, has shared practical advice for workers offered a voluntary exit package - ask for the complete terms in writing before making a decision.Microsoft on Monday announced a Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) for around 60,000 eligible employees globally. The programme covers selected employees in participating organisations across India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, subject to eligibility criteria. The initiative comes as Microsoft continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence and adjust its workforce.WHAT DID THE SOFTWARE ENGINEER SAY?In his post, Jain advised employees against immediately accepting or rejecting an offer or simply waiting to see what their colleagues decide.
He suggested two responses employees could use when HR presents a voluntary exit package.Casual response: “Can I get the full breakdown in writing first? I'll get back before the deadline.” Professional response: “Thanks for this.
Could you share the written terms, severance, notice pay, gratuity, leave encashment, what happens to my unvested stock and the date my insurance ends? I'd like to decide before the deadline.”Jain explained that employees should use the time available to examine the numbers, assess how long finding another job might take and then decide whether the offer makes financial sense. He explained the point with two hypothetical employees receiving the same package.
One accepts on the first day and discovers the insurance implications only after signing. The other requests the details, checks how close they are to five years of service for gratuity and asks whether the last working day can be adjusted. Both receive the same offer, but the second employee leaves with a clearer understanding of the benefits and conditions. If HR offers you a voluntary exit package, never say: Yes, where do I sign No thanks, I'm happy here Let me see what my team does Instead say:— Shubh Jain (@shubh19) October 27, 2026For employees in India, the details of an exit package can significantly affect its overall value.
Workers should verify severance calculations, notice pay, unused leave encashment, insurance coverage and the treatment of unvested stock.Employees should request written clarification rather than assume that every benefit will continue after their last working day. They should also check the acceptance deadline and whether any terms are negotiable.Jain's central message is simple: a voluntary exit offer does not require an impulsive decision.
Reviewing the written terms, understanding the financial implications and considering future employment prospects can help employees make a more informed choice.- Ends
