A massive manhunt is currently underway across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring districts following the daring escape of 17 remand prisoners from the Theni sub-jail on a Monday night. The inmates orchestrated the jailbreak by faking a medical emergency before violently assaulting three prison personnel to break free from the facility.
Out of the 17 undertrials who managed to flee, four individuals have already been apprehended by law enforcement agencies, while the remaining 13 continue to remain at large. In response to the security breach, the Tamil Nadu Police have deployed drones and formed 17 dedicated special teams tasked with tracking down and capturing the absconding prisoners.
The prison break has prompted swift administrative action, with the state government moving to suspend nine jail staff members in the wake of the incident due to clear security lapses. Meanwhile, the developing situation has also triggered intense political friction, with opposition parties launching attacks over administrative shortcomings.
