Mercedes-Benz is set to expand its electric vehicle lineup in India with the upcoming introduction of the GLC Electric. The new luxury electric SUV will be locally assembled at the automaker's manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune, and will initially be offered in the 400 4MATIC configuration.
In terms of dimensions, the GLC Electric measures 4,845mm long, 1,913mm wide, and 1,644mm high. Its 2,972mm wheelbase is noticeably longer than that of its internal combustion counterpart, providing an extra 47mm of rear legroom. The vehicle provides 570 litres of boot space, expandable to 1,740 litres by folding down the rear seats, alongside a 128-litre front trunk. It maintains a kerb weight of 2,535kg and supports a towing capacity of up to 2.4 tonnes.
The cabin's centerpiece is the expansive 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, merging the digital instrument panel, central infotainment display, and front passenger screen into one continuous panel. Powered by the fourth-generation MBUX software, the system incorporates artificial intelligence from Microsoft and Google, including a Multi Agent Approach for conversational virtual assistance and a Google Automotive AI Agent for navigation. Additionally, the SUV features a SKY CONTROL panoramic roof with switchable glass technology that can alternate between transparent and opaque settings while displaying illuminated ambient stars.
For safety and driver assistance, the vehicle utilizes the MB.DRIVE suite, which gathers data from up to 10 external cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to manage functions like adaptive cruise control, steering assistance, lane-change support, and automated parking. An optional Vegan Package certified by The Vegan Society is also available for interior materials.
The India-bound Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC relies on a 94kWh NMC battery pack mated to a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. This configuration delivers a combined output of 489bhp and 800Nm of torque, pushing the SUV from 0 to 100kmph in a claimed 4.3 seconds up to a top speed of 210kmph. WLTP-rated driving range reaches up to 715km depending on driving conditions and vehicle specifications.
Thanks to its 800-volt electrical architecture, the SUV accommodates DC fast charging up to 330kW, enabling a 10 to 80 percent charge replenishment in roughly 22 minutes or adding up to 305km of range in just 10 minutes. Standard AC charging operates at 11kW, with an optional 22kW charger also offered.
Handling and ride comfort are managed by AIRMATIC air suspension alongside available rear-wheel steering, which turns the rear wheels by up to 4.5 degrees to tighten the turning circle from 12.1 metres to 11.2 metres. The One-Box braking system coordinates regenerative and conventional friction brakes, offering up to 300kW of recuperation across four distinct levels. Furthermore, a specialized TERRAIN mode and a transparent-bonnet camera view assist with off-road navigation.
Pricing and final market availability details are slated to be revealed during the official launch, bolstering Mercedes-Benz's growing luxury electric portfolio in the country.
