Twelve years after the release of Mary Kom, boxing champion Mary Kom has said the Priyanka Chopra-starrer did not present the full reality of her life. Speaking days after her eviction from the Bigg Boss 20 house, the London 2012 Olympics bronze medallist said the film showed only 10 per cent of her struggle and hard work.Mary also ruled out the need for a sequel, saying her career and journey had already been covered in the film and her book, Unbreakable.
Her remarks come years after Priyanka acknowledged that an actor from the Northeast should probably have played the Manipuri boxer and spoke about the physical and mental preparation required for the role.Released in 2014, Mary Kom followed the journey of the boxer as she became a six-time world amateur boxing champion. Directed by Omung Kumar, the film starred Priyanka in the lead role and earned her a National Award for Best Actress.Asked whether a sequel should be made, Mary said she did not believe a follow-up was necessary because people already knew her story. “I don't think there should be a sequel now; everybody knows my story.
My career and journey have already been shown in the film and my book Unbreakable. However, the biopic was not real.
I felt some parts of the story were not real. Only 10 per cent of my struggle and hard work was shown in it,” she told The Indian Express.Mary said readers would understand the extent of her struggle and hard work only through her book.
She also spoke about what she hoped the future would hold and addressed public interest in her personal life. “If you read the book, only then can you see my struggle and hard work. The remaining life, I don't know what will happen, but I wish the future will be smooth and happy.
People want to know if there will be room for love in my life. I will decide if that happens in the future,” she added.Priyanka Chopra had questioned her castingIn a 2022 interview, Priyanka said she had initially been sceptical about accepting the role because Mary was a living sporting icon who had created space for several female athletes.
She also acknowledged that she did not resemble the boxer.“When I played Mary Kom, I was very sceptical about taking it on in the beginning because she was a living, breathing icon and she made space for so many female athletes. Plus, I look nothing like her.
She comes from the Northeast of India and I am from northern India, and we physically didn't look alike. In hindsight, the part should have probably gone to someone from the Northeast,” Priyanka told Vanity Fair.Priyanka said her admiration for Mary had prompted her to accept the film after the makers insisted that she take on the role.“But I was just greedy as an actor to get a chance to tell her story because she inspired me so much, as a woman, as an Indian woman and as an athlete.
When the filmmakers insisted I do it, I was just like, ‘You know what? I'm going to do it,’” she said.Five months of training for the roleTo prepare for the film, Priyanka met Mary and spent time at the boxer's home with her family.
She also trained for nearly five months to learn boxing and develop the physique of an athlete.“I had to spend almost five months training to learn the sport, which is not easy, by the way, and to physically alter my body as well, to get into an athlete's shape. So, physically, it was really tough; mentally, it was really tough.
Because I physically didn't look like her, I decided to embody her spirit. So, I spent a lot of time with her so that she could educate me about what her choices were and why she made the choices that she did,” Priyanka said. From the boxing ring to Bigg BossMary's personal life came under scrutiny after her separation from her husband, Onler Kom, became public in 2025.
Mary later alleged that she had been cheated financially and had lost trust in him. Onler denied the allegations and made counterclaims about her alleged relationships. Before joining the reality show, Mary told India Today that her participation could give her an opportunity to speak about her life and allow viewers to know her beyond her sporting career.“I have been loved and respected for so long, but the kind of pain I went through in the past, only I know about it.
It's my truth, it's my story and I want to tell the world about it. If I get a chance to tell the truth, I will definitely share my story.
I was portrayed in a very bad light, and because of that, I faced a lot. Through this show, I also want people to know the real me.
They have seen me as a sports personality, but I am so much more than that,” she said.Bigg Boss 20 premiered on September 6, streaming on JioHotstar at 9 pm and airing on Colors TV at 10.30 pm every day.- Ends
