Kochi's transferred police commissioner denied any outside pressure in the fatal crash investigation. His clarification comes as police seek cancellation of bail granted to the judge's minor son.Kochi,Oct 30, 2026 12:56 ISTKochi City Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, who was recently transferred amid reports of lapses in the investigation into a fatal road accident involving a judge's minor son, has denied being contacted by the judicial officer or anyone else over the case, news agency Press Trust of India reported. The case relates to the death of 55-year-old Jayabalakrishnan, whose scooter was hit by a Mercedes-Benz in Kochi on October 25.

The car was allegedly driven by the 17-year-old son of an Additional District and Sessions Judge.Kumar, an Inspector General-rank officer, was transferred and replaced by IG R Nishanthini. There had been reports that Kumar was transferred after the judge allegedly contacted him following the accident. The victim's family has alleged a conspiracy to sabotage the case after the minor was granted bail at the police station.

The development triggered protests and raised questions over accountability. The minor was later taken into custody after additional charges were added, but the Juvenile Justice Board granted him bail.

His father, the judge, was subsequently named as an accused in the case, but the Kerala High Court directed the police not to arrest him.Speaking to reporters, Kumar said the judge had never contacted him and that he had not received any request to handle the investigation in a particular manner, PTI reported. “Let me make one thing clear. From the beginning of the case to the end, no one from outside contacted me.

We have not made any intervention in the case. The investigation has proceeded on the basis of evidence and will continue to do so,” he said.Responding to reports that the judge had called him and that the investigation was handled in a manner favourable to the judicial officer, Kumar said, “The judge never called me.

Nobody else has called me either. Neither the judge nor anyone else has ever approached me asking that the case be handled in a particular way.

I have never received any such request from anywhere.”Kumar said he wanted to clarify the matter as he might not get another opportunity to do so and was not active on social media. He also denied receiving any illegal request in connection with the case.On his transfer, Kumar said it was a routine administrative move and part of police service. “We are government employees and officers in the police service.

Transfers and other such matters are part of our lives. I have no issue with it,” he said.Meanwhile, the police have approached the District Sessions Court seeking cancellation of the bail granted to the minor.

The petition is scheduled to be considered on Friday.Kumar has maintained that no one tried to influence the investigation, while the police continue their legal action in the case and seek cancellation of the minor's bail.- Ends
