For Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta graduate Jahnvi Singh, more than three years at McKinsey offered exposure to varied clients, frequent travel and the perks of consulting. But a year after moving to Google, she says the bigger change has been in her everyday life, from having a more settled work routine to finding time for workouts and weekday plans with friends.Jahnvi recently shared a video on Instagram reflecting on her move from consulting to Big Tech, comparing the work, travel and office experiences at the two companies. One of the clearest differences, she explained, is the kind of work she does.

At McKinsey, she moved between clients and tackled different business problems. Her role at Google, by contrast, involves working with a single business.

While this offers her the chance to build a deeper understanding of one industry, she acknowledged that the work can sometimes become repetitive. The shift is equally apparent in her travel calendar.

Consulting frequently took Jahnvi between Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Delhi. She is now based at Google's Gurugram office, with opportunities to travel overseas for work two to three times a year. Her comparison also extended to workplace perks.

Jahnvi recalled the five-star hotel stays, dinners and parties that came with her consulting role. At Google, she pointed to more everyday conveniences, including office transport and a cafeteria offering a range of healthy food.

But it is what happens after work that seems to matter most to her. Jahnvi said her consulting schedule often made it difficult to exercise or organise plans with friends during the week.

Her current routine gives her more room to stay active and social without having to seek permission for weekday outings.Watch the video here:In her caption, Jahnvi reflected on leaving what she once considered her dream job after completing her MBA at IIM Calcutta and spending over three years in consulting. The move, she suggested, has changed her perspective on professional success. Rather than treating career progression as a constant climb up the ladder, she has come to see it as a question of what she wants her life to look like beyond the job title.Jahnvi Singh’s account is not a rejection of consulting, but a reflection on the trade-offs involved in choosing one career path over another.- Ends
