On October 29, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s jibe at the Congress for not winning a single seat in the Legislative Council elections, the grand old party won the Nagpur Graduates’ constituency seat. Congress candidate Abhijit Wanjari defeated BJP’s Sudhakar Kohale by 3,271 votes.
The result drew attention, as Nagpur is home to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters.A video of a large crowd singing and dancing, with some people holding a Congress flag, is now being widely shared as part of the Congress celebrations after the Nagpur win.India Today Fact Check found that the video is about 10 days old and unrelated to the MLC victory in Nagpur. OUR PROBEA reverse search of frames from the video led us to the same clip posted on October 19 by Rohit Rajendra Pawar, a Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) MLA from Karjat-Jamkhed in Maharashtra.
This confirms that the video predates the Nagpur MLC results.Pawar’s Marathi caption congratulated Satej Patil, Ruturaj Patil, and their team on winning the Gokul Milk Union election in Kolhapur, more than 800 km from Nagpur. A keyword search led us to reports by BBC Marathi and Loksatta dated October 19, which said the Congress-led Rajarshi Shahu Shetkari Samavichari Aghadi, headed by Satej Patil, won 13 of the 25 seats on the Gokul board.
It defeated the panel backed by the ruling Mahayuti alliance. The results were declared late on October 19, as also reported by The Print.Satej Patil, popularly known as Bunty Patil, is a senior Congress leader, MLC from Maharashtra, and former state minister.
The Gokul Milk Union, formally the Kolhapur District Cooperative Milk Producers Union, is a major dairy cooperative that plays a significant role in the region’s rural economy and local politics. The election was seen as a prestige battle between Patil and the Mahayuti alliance. In contrast, no news outlets reported a celebration of this scale by the Congress in Nagpur.
Wanjari and his supporters held a brief celebration, which can be seen in the video below. It’s then clear that the viral video has no connection to Abhijit Wanjari’s victory.- Ends
