President Donald Trump extended congratulations to Democrats for executing a successful campaign after the party delivered heavy defeats to his Republican allies, capturing majorities in both houses of Congress and securing several governorships.
Speaking in an early morning interview with Fox News following a difficult night for the GOP, which included losses in traditionally conservative strongholds, Trump declined to accept personal responsibility for the outcome. He argued that despite the strength of his administration, voters failed to recognize broader economic achievements because gasoline prices remained too high.
Trump attributed elevated fuel costs directly to the conflict involving Iran, while reiterating his defense of the military campaign in the Middle East as a vital measure to stop Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He acknowledged the political reality, noting that such outcomes tend to happen regardless of presidential performance when economic pain points persist.
Looking ahead to a divided government, Trump expressed a willingness to collaborate with opposition-led chambers if Democrats show a readiness to work with him. At the same time, he emphasized the significant leverage provided by his presidential veto, suggesting that any extreme legislation passed by Congress would be swiftly rejected until both sides are forced to negotiate.
When questioned about specific candidate selections in the primary races, such as backing challengers over established incumbents, Trump rejected the idea that his endorsements were misjudged and maintained his criticism of disloyal party members.
Despite having urged voters during the final weeks of the campaign to treat the midterms as a referendum on his own leadership, Trump maintained in the interview that he did not view the results as a personal setback since his name was not on the ballot.
