Google has maintained its position as the dominant internet search engine for decades, but the rise of artificial intelligence is beginning to alter long-standing user habits. Rather than sifting through pages of results filled with search engine optimization links, a growing number of people are turning directly to conversational AI tools for answers. According to company officials, the volume of search-like queries on ChatGPT has reached approximately 20 percent of Google's overall search volume, a notable milestone for a feature introduced relatively recently.

These insights were shared by Adam Fry, consumer product lead for ChatGPT, during a discussion for the Big Technology newsletter. Fry also disclosed that the platform expanded its weekly active user base from one billion to 1.2 billion users over a two-month timeframe, capturing roughly 200 million new participants during that period. This shift aligns with findings from a Pew Research Center survey, which indicated that gathering information is the primary application of AI chatbots for American adults, with 42 percent utilizing AI for that specific purpose.

The same research highlighted ChatGPT's substantial lead in audience reach compared to competitors, noting that 44 percent of American adults had utilized the platform, versus 24 percent who tested Google Gemini. Fry noted that individuals frequently consult the chatbot regarding people, locations, and subjects demanding current data, including financial and health-related inquiries—types of questions previously directed solely to traditional search engines.

Despite these competitive metrics, Google maintains a massive overall lead, processing an estimated five trillion searches annually. Alphabet Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai has previously maintained that the expansion of AI chatbots does not inherently harm Google's market share, framing the digital landscape as non-zero-sum. Nevertheless, traditional search experiences have faced persistent user criticism over commercialized content and web clutter, prompting many to seek alternative methods for locating reliable recommendations.

While AI platforms continue to face scrutiny regarding occasional inaccuracies, the streamlined convenience they offer remains a powerful draw for consumers. Although available metrics do not explicitly confirm whether these AI interactions are directly displacing Google traffic, they underscore a broader willingness among users to adopt conversational technology for everyday informational needs.
