Delhi Curbs: Lawyers Brief Supreme Court on Detentions, Metro Shutdown and Curbs
Lawyers have moved the Supreme Court regarding detentions and heavy police action during protests in the national capital. In an extraordinary Sunday hearing, advocates submitted that the right to protest was compromised and raised grievances over restrictions imposed around Bhagwan Das Road and across Delhi. They highlighted that Metro and rail services were closed down despite the apex court's prior directives against blanket bans on essential public transport. Senior advocates and bar representatives presented accounts of alleged police assault and submitted visuals of enforcement actions, requesting the removal of all movement restrictions. In response to criticism of the security curbs, the central government maintained that the measures were deployed to preserve law and order rather than impose a lockdown. The government stated that the restrictions safeguarded constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission and Parliament, while asserting that law enforcement personnel acted professionally to avoid disruptions.
