2026 has been Suriya's year, to say the least. After a prolonged box-office slump that lasted nearly a decade, the actor finally found his footing with two consecutive hits – Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons.
Now, with his third release of the year, Scene, will Suriya strike gold again? Can he end 2026 on a hat-trick?With just days to go for Scene's November 6 release, the big question is whether the actor can sustain his winning streak, especially after seemingly reworking his script choices and reconnecting with audiences.2026 is Suriya's yearSuriya is one of those actors in Tamil cinema who can pull off logic-defying mass entertainers, message-heavy socially conscious films and content-driven stories with equal conviction.
However, the last decade has not been particularly kind to his box-office fortunes. Films such as NGK and Kanguva failed to meet expectations, while his choice of projects came under increasing scrutiny. It appears that Suriya has finally found a way to reconnect with the audience, and the answer might lie in the kind of stories he is choosing.
It began with RJ Balaji's Karuppu, a fantasy entertainer that blended commercial elements with a social message. The film gave Suriya the much-needed box-office breakthrough after years of struggling to deliver a major theatrical success.
Karuppu went on to collect around Rs 300 crore worldwide, becoming the biggest hit of his career and one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year. What worked in Karuppu was its ability to balance devotion, fantasy, social commentary and commercial entertainment. The film questioned the loopholes in the legal system while giving Suriya the opportunity to return to his familiar mass-hero territory.
His transformation into a deity-like figure, in particular, became one of the film's talking points. It was a reminder that audiences still enjoyed watching him in larger-than-life roles, provided the story gave them something to invest in.
Then came Vishwanath and Sons in August. For his second major success of 2026, Suriya joined hands with Telugu filmmaker Venky Atluri.
Unlike Karuppu, this was a family entertainer that explored an unconventional age-gap romance. It was a departure from the action-heavy space that audiences often associate with the actor. Its biggest strength was the way it dealt with contemporary relationship dynamics without losing its emotional appeal or humour.
Suriya's charming, restrained performance, Mamitha's fresh pairing with him and Radikaa Sarathkumar's memorable portrayal of his mother gave the film a wider family appeal. The film also benefited from Suriya's popularity in the Telugu-speaking markets and Venky Atluri's familiarity with that audience. Interestingly, despite being a Tamil production, its Telugu version contributed significantly to its theatrical success.
It made nearly Rs 209 crore in its lifetime. The film's success was significant because it demonstrated that Suriya did not necessarily need a larger-than-life avatar or a high-concept action narrative to bring audiences to theatres. A relatively intimate story, backed by an emotional conflict and a different kind of character, could work just as well.Together, Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons have contributed over Rs 500 crore to Tamil cinema's box-office tally in 2026.
More importantly, they have given Suriya something he had been missing for years – consistency at the box office. Can Scene make it three in a row?Now comes the third test. Scene, directed by Jithu Madhavan, marks another interesting choice for Suriya.
The filmmaker has built a distinct identity in Malayalam cinema with films such as Romancham and Aavesham, both of which struck a chord with audiences through their unusual storytelling, humour and memorable characters. While Romancham blended horror and comedy, Aavesham, starring Fahadh Faasil, became a hugely popular action comedy, powered by its quirky characters and engaging narrative. With Scene, Jithu Madhavan steps into Tamil cinema with Suriya, Nazriya Nazim and Naslen.
The combination of a filmmaker known for his unconventional storytelling and a star who is enjoying a career resurgence makes the film an interesting proposition. The film also puts Suriya in an interesting position. After two successes in contrasting genres, he now has the opportunity to prove that his resurgence is not limited to one particular kind of story.
A third consecutive success would strengthen the argument that the actor has finally found the right balance between commercial appeal and content-driven cinema. However, a hat-trick is easier said than done. The expectations surrounding Scene are considerably higher because of the momentum generated by his previous two releases.
The film will have to find its own audience and deliver on its promise rather than simply ride on Suriya's recent box-office success.- Ends
