In a festive boost for the Tamil film industry, the Tamil Nadu government has disbursed Rs 15.68 crore in subsidies to the creators of 224 films. The financial assistance, announced during a gathering in Chepauk, Chennai, clears funds that had remained pending for seven years, with each qualifying producer being awarded a cheque amounting to Rs 7 lakh.
Prominent producer T Siva of Amma Creations expressed appreciation for the decision, conveying his thanks to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and Minister Rajmohan Arumugam for securing the release of the funds. In a social media statement, Siva characterized the initiative as a meaningful holiday present for the motion picture sector.
Siva noted that a significant portion of the beneficiaries comprises individuals who faced severe financial hardship after losing their livelihoods to film production, adding that the state support offers renewed hope and a fresh start for them and their families. The films chosen for the grants were produced between 2015 and 2022 following evaluations by a selection committee led by retired Justice SK Krishnan.
The state subsidy scheme is designed to foster the creation of low-budget Tamil motion pictures, particularly those focusing on socially impactful topics. During the distribution event, Minister Rajmohan highlighted the capacity of cinema to challenge social issues and commended filmmakers who balance commercial success with meaningful narratives, while also announcing that future state awards for Tamil cinema will be granted strictly on the basis of merit.
