The recent electoral setback in the Maharashtra Legislative Council polls has triggered damage control measures within the ruling Mahayuti alliance. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has instructed Shiv Sena members to avoid making public statements against coalition partners, while the BJP has started assessing its losses.
During the October 23 elections, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi secured three of the five contested seats, dealing a notable blow to the governing coalition. Congress candidate Abhijeet Wanjari won the Nagpur Graduates' constituency after a counting process lasting over 40 hours. This loss carried high symbolic weight because Nagpur serves as the base for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and the RSS headquarters. Out of the five Graduates' and Teachers' seats up for grabs, the opposition took three, leaving the Mahayuti with two.
In response to the results, Shinde emphasized the need for a joint evaluation of the coalition's performance. He directed leaders to pinpoint weaknesses, prevent future errors, and ensure that internal friction does not aid rivals. Local representatives have been tasked with preparing comprehensive reports on the causes of the defeats, which the Mahayuti coordination committee will subsequently evaluate.
Concurrently, the BJP launched its own internal assessment. National general secretary BL Santhosh traveled to Pune to meet with party legislators and corporators, evaluating the factors behind the losses, including potential organizational flaws and communication gaps within the alliance.
Senior BJP leader and Maharashtra minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that the party would investigate why it lost the Nagpur seat and check whether any coalition partners neglected to campaign for allied candidates. Bawankule, who served as the BJP election in-charge for Nagpur, assumed personal responsibility for the outcome and announced that the party would look inward to uncover any deficiencies despite active voter outreach efforts.
Addressing questions about whether the Shiv Sena withheld backing from the BJP, Bawankule maintained that the coalition would evaluate partner performance collectively rather than pointing fingers. He also mentioned the Amravati constituency, where Shinde had requested BJP assistance, noting that while BJP lawmakers campaigned for the partner candidate, alliance synergy was lacking in certain areas. He confirmed that the three coalition partners will jointly review these issues moving forward.
