Traffic congestion on Pammal-Kundrathur Road in the Anakaputhur region. | Photo Credit: Rajagopal J K Suburban areas from Pallavaram to Kundrathur, a stretch of about 8 kilometers, are linked by only one main road, Pammal-Anakaputhur-Kundrathur Road, running through Pammal and Anakaputhur and ending at the Kundrathur region. This stretch has been narrow for over four decades and is becoming more congested because of encroachments and traders unwilling to give up land for road widening.Open gutters, increasing two-wheeler ridership, heavy vehicle traffic, public transportation, many schools in the area, a lack of traffic signals, and full-time police officials add to congestion on the road almost throughout the day.Population growth in the area is fuelled by the continued proliferation of apartment complexes.Things get worse even with a drizzle, and the roads are now pockmarked with countless potholes.
There are no alternate routes or wide enough bylanes, and one has to endure the pain of driving on the narrow main road. The authorities need a strong-willed approach to develop a long-term arrangement that enables smooth traffic movement. Published - October 25, 2026 02:29 am IST
