New Delhi: Traditional Indian lehengas, sarees, meticulous craftsmanship, and festive energy took over New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art as designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee hosted a grand Diwali gathering on October 22.
While festive preparations were already underway across various cities, Sabyasachi brought a taste of authentic Indian celebrations to New York City at the iconic cultural landmark, which also serves as the venue for the annual Met Gala. The high-profile event followed the designer's recent return to New York Fashion Week after nearly two decades and the opening of his expansive flagship store in the city, further underscoring India's expanding footprint in the global luxury landscape.
A host of notable personalities joined the designer at the celebration, including actor Rani Mukerji, designer Masaba Gupta, entrepreneur Anjula Acharia, and actor Kal Penn. Rani Mukerji opted for an elegant satin saree paired with a sleeveless blouse, completing her look with oversized glasses and a sparkling silver bag. Masaba Gupta wore a white corset styled with a draped skirt-cum-saree featuring a striking red border reminiscent of the traditional Bengali laal paar shada saree, finished with a maroon Sabyasachi bag and a vibrant multi-hued necklace.
Sabyasachi himself wore a classic black bandhgala paired with white trousers, adding a playful touch with bright pink socks visible beneath his black shoes. The guest list largely showcased Sabyasachi creations, featuring an array of gorgeous lehengas, sarees, and the designer's signature embellished long jackets.
The venue featured elaborate decorations, highlighted by a picturesque grazing table designed as a garden-inspired installation complete with dramatic floral arrangements, cascading pomegranates, and an abundant display of fresh produce. Deep greens, rich reds, and earthy tones gave the setup an opulent festive aesthetic, which even included a remarkably lifelike peacock installation.
Although The Metropolitan Museum of Art has previously hosted public Diwali events—including a 2014 program that attracted over 800 attendees and a family-oriented celebration in 2015—this gathering marked a distinct fusion of Indian fashion, signature craftsmanship, and cultural grandeur curated by Sabyasachi at the historic New York landmark.
