Delhi Lockdown: Metro Shutdown, Heavy Security & Airport Detentions Over CEC Gyanesh Kumar Protests
A massive security clampdown has been enforced across New Delhi to prevent planned protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Authorities shut down 40 metro stations across the New Delhi district, suspended mobile internet services until 10 PM, and invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita prohibiting public assemblies. Security forces, including the Central Reserve Police Force, Central Industrial Security Force, and Delhi Police, established extensive barricades around Jantar Mantar and the national capital. The action followed plans by student pressure group members, arriving on a flight from Mumbai, to stage demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. Three members of the pressure group were detained upon landing at Delhi Airport. The group, which earlier held protests over paper leaks, is questioning the functioning of the Election Commission regarding the special intensive revision, an issue also raised by opposition delegations meeting the President of India.
