The battle for Middle-earth is about to get darker, and Charlie Vickers’ Sauron is ready to take centre stage. The new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 sets up a war that could decide the fate of every kingdom, with the Dark Lord inching closer to his ultimate goal of forging the One Ring and ruling them all.Set five years after the fall of Eregion, the third season finds Sauron’s armies having conquered much of Middle-earth.

What makes the trailer particularly exciting is the shift in his ambition. No longer content with manipulating others from the shadows, Sauron is now consumed by the need to forge the master ring that will give him control over the free peoples. “Let the hunt begin,” he declares, unhinged. But Sauron’s pursuit of absolute power is not the only story worth watching.

The arrival of Jamie Campbell Bower as Celeborn, Galadriel’s long-lost husband, adds a fresh emotional complication to the narrative. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) has spent much of the series grappling with her complicated connection to Sauron, and Celeborn’s presence could change the equation.

It is a fascinating dynamic, although the real question is how the show balances Galadriel’s personal life with the war threatening Middle-earth. Clark, meanwhile, continues to bring determination and vulnerability to a character caught between duty, loss, and the consequences of her choices.

The trailer also gives us glimpses of the other kingdoms caught in Sauron’s expanding shadow. Numenor, already fractured by political upheaval, looks set for more turmoil.

With Pharazon in power and Elendil and the Faithful facing an uncertain future, the kingdom’s internal divisions could prove just as consequential as the war unfolding elsewhere.Khazad-dum, meanwhile, faces dangers both within and beneath its mountain halls. The Balrog is a particularly intriguing presence.

After being revealed in Season 2, the creature is set to play a more prominent role this time, and there is a major addition to its mythology: Simon Pegg voices the Balrog, who will speak for the first time in the series. The creature’s connection to Sauron’s quest for the One Ring adds an unexpected twist, while the Dwarves’ struggle to protect their kingdom makes their storyline increasingly important to the larger conflict.

Gandalf, played by Daniel Weyman, also remains a key part of the unfolding mythology. Following his encounters with Tom Bombadil in the previous season, his journey towards understanding his powers adds a more mystical dimension to the story.

The trailer’s wider glimpse of Middle-earth suggests that the wizard’s development will unfold alongside the growing threat, rather than in isolation from it. Visually, the trailer is every bit as ambitious as one would expect from the Prime Video series.

The sweeping landscapes, intricate production design and imposing battle imagery make Middle-earth feel vast and lived-in. From the grandeur of Numenor to the ominous depths of Khazad-dum, the cinematography gives each realm its own identity while keeping the looming threat of war firmly in view. What works best about the trailer is that it promises several interconnected conflicts rather than one straightforward battle between good and evil.

Sauron’s quest for the One Ring drives the story, but the political tensions in Numenor, the uncertainty surrounding Khazad-dum, Gandalf’s journey and Celeborn’s arrival all give the season room to explore different shades of loyalty, ambition, and sacrifice. With Sauron closer than ever to forging the One Ring, the stakes are unmistakably high. If the trailer delivers on its promise, Season 3 could be the series’ most consequential chapter yet.

The series will premiere on November 11 on Prime Video.- Ends
