Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to begin night-time cleaning drives in major markets and residential colonies during the festival season, warning that negligence would not be tolerated. The directions followed complaints about garbage heaps and delays in waste collection in parts of the capital. At a review meeting, Gupta expressed dissatisfaction with sanitation efforts, particularly in busy markets and shopping areas. She asked the mayor and municipal commissioner to deploy adequate staff and hire additional workers if needed.
Cleaning at night would help keep markets and colonies clean during the day, when public movement is higher, she said.Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, Mayor Parvesh Vahi, Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma and MCD officers attended the meeting. OFFICIALS TOLD TO INSPECT WORKGupta ordered the immediate removal of garbage and construction debris from roads, intersections, flyovers, markets, residential areas and other public places. She directed senior officials to inspect their areas and address shortcomings, saying meetings and reports alone would not improve sanitation. “Officers will have to go into the field and ensure that the instructions given are being followed.
Wherever deficiencies are found, immediate solutions should be provided in coordination with the concerned agencies,” she said.Sood asked municipal officials to use new technology to clear garbage heaps and improve cleanliness. He warned of action against negligent officials and said improvements must be visible during the festive period.- Ends
