The Election Commission agreed to examine these representations and submit a report to the court.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana was hearing a batch of petitions challenging the revision of electoral rolls being conducted by the Election Commission in several states.During the hearing, counsel for the petitioners said several people had been unable to complete the enumeration process because of a shortage of time and sought an extension of the deadline. Chief Justice Surya Kant said the petitioners could identify those who had been left out and bring their cases to the Election Commission's notice. “Find out wherever you feel there are persons who should still be given a chance or opportunity.
Bring it to their notice by way of representation. We will tell them to examine it, and we will keep it pending,” he said. When counsel said the verification exercise was scheduled to conclude on Friday and could be extended, the Chief Justice said an extension was unnecessary because the process was continuing. “There is no need to extend time because it is a continuous process,” he said.
Appearing for the Election Commission, senior advocate D S Naidu said the exercise had been completed and affected people could still approach the authorities for corrections through the prescribed procedure, according to PTI.The bench recorded that the petitioners could provide details of people who had been unable to submit their enumeration forms within the stipulated period. It directed the Election Commission to consider their representations and place a report before the court.
The poll panel was also given four weeks to respond to allegations of large-scale deletions. In summary, the Supreme Court refused to extend the revision deadline but kept open a route for people who missed it, directing the Election Commission to examine their cases and report back.- Ends
