SC Special Hearing on Contempt Pleas Over Delhi Curbs, Metro Closures and Detentions
The Supreme Court convened a special Sunday hearing on multiple contempt petitions challenging the detention of protesters and extensive curbs imposed in Delhi on October 10. The petitions allege that authorities shut down 45 metro stations, suspended internet access, closed railway stations, and executed illegal detentions of political leaders, lawyers, journalists, and citizens in violation of earlier court directives against blanket restrictions. The pleas also claim disproportionate use of force and mistreatment of protesters in custody. Describing the matter as urgent and exceptional, the court initiated individual hearings on the petitions, questioning the necessity of the measures and non-compliance with its previous instructions.
