Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu’s son Gautam Ghattamaneni has little patience for films that don’t work for him, and Nani’s The Paradise is his latest target. Gautam has given the action drama just one star on film-tracking and review platform Letterboxd, calling it "very disappointing" and describing its editing as "atrocious".
He did, however, find a couple of things to appreciate, singling out the cinematography and the performances in emotional scenes.Gautam shared his verdict on the film directed by Srikanth Odela in a review that left little room for interpretation. "I liked the cinematography and the acting in emotional scenes. I liked nothing else.
Very disappointing. Also, the editing was just atrocious," he wrote.Read his review here:It’s the sort of blunt review that’s become part of Gautam’s online reputation.
His Letterboxd account attracted considerable attention after it went public, with his ratings making headlines for their candour. He’s previously given Yash’s Toxic half a star and handed two-star ratings to some of his father’s films, making it clear that having a famous surname doesn’t necessarily translate into generous reviews.
The attention surrounding his film diary became so intense that Gautam initially removed its link from his Instagram bio. He has since restored it, seemingly with a sense of humour about the interest in his viewing habits.
His Letterboxd profile now carries a cheeky caption: "Welcome to this apparently national news worthy page. I will try to live up to that," accompanied by sobbing and V-sign emojis. All about Nani's The ParadiseMeanwhile, The Paradise has had a mixed reception from audiences and critics.
Set in the 1980s, the film follows the Savaari tribe as its members fight for citizenship and recognition in a system that refuses to acknowledge their contributions. Nani plays Jadal, the son of the tribe’s leader Sammakka, played by Sonali Kulkarni.
Their fight brings them into conflict with feudal overlord Shikanja Malik, played by Mohan Babu, and his son Vikram Malik, portrayed by Raghav Juyal. Kayadu Lohar also features in the film.Produced by Sudhakar Cherukuri and Ishan Saksena under Sri Lakshmi Venkateshwara Cinemas and IVY Entertainment, the action drama has faced criticism over its writing and execution.
It’s these aspects that appear to have left Gautam cold, despite his appreciation for the film’s visuals and emotional performances. The film is now available to stream on Netflix.
Meanwhile, actor Mahesh Babu is currently working on SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi, which also stars Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The filmmaker’s first feature since RRR (2022), the ambitious project is being mounted on a grand scale, with its promotional material hinting at a time-travel narrative.Whether Varanasi will earn a more generous rating from Gautam remains to be seen.
For now, The Paradise has joined the list of films that haven't managed to impress him.- Ends
