Chennai: Omron Healthcare has commenced full-scale production at its first manufacturing facility in India, located near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Situated at Origins by Mahindra, the plant covers approximately 24,000 square metres and is operated by Omron Healthcare Manufacturing India Pvt. Ltd. While initial output is directed toward domestic consumers, the company intends to develop the Chennai plant into an international supply hub.

The facility currently features five production lines and manufactures three specific blood pressure monitor series, namely the HEM-7090, HEM-7181, and HEM-7183T. The HEM-7090 is built as a standard upper-arm monitor for general home use, while the HEM-7181 includes a trend indicator and memory functions. The HEM-7183T model incorporates Bluetooth connectivity compatible with the Omron Connect application alongside an easy-to-wrap cuff design.

According to the firm, the plant utilizes advanced manufacturing technologies and quality-assurance methodologies established at its existing facilities in Japan and Vietnam. This approach ensures that devices produced locally maintain measurement accuracy and quality benchmarks comparable to Omron products distributed worldwide. The operation also contributes to the Make in India initiative by fostering local component sourcing, workforce training, and regional job creation.

This industrial expansion coincides with a rising prevalence of hypertension across India, where an estimated 300 million people live with the condition. Despite this high figure, less than five per cent of Indian households regularly use home blood pressure monitoring equipment. By ramping up domestic production, Omron seeks to improve accessibility for home monitoring and assist in the early detection and management of cardiovascular risks.

Having operated in the country since 2010, Omron has previously partnered with local medical professionals and collaborated with the Indian Society of Hypertension to establish national home monitoring guidelines. Looking forward, the company targets a tenfold expansion in the Chennai factory's production capacity by 2028. Future plans also include introducing the manufacture of nebulisers for respiratory conditions such as asthma to further strengthen the availability of home healthcare devices domestically and abroad.
