Just days after Cyclone Arnab battered parts of India's eastern coast, a new weather system is gathering strength over the Bay of Bengal, with satellite images showing an organised mass of clouds and thunderstorms developing over the region.Images captured by India's INSAT-3DS weather satellite on Saturday morning, October 31, show a developing weather system over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. A satellite image of the Bay of Bengal shows a new weather system emerging.

The system is associated with intense to very intense thunderstorm activity over the southeast Bay and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The development is being closely watched as the weather department expects the system to strengthen further and move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast. WHAT DID ISRO SATELLITES CAPTURE?The satellite observations show scattered to broken cloud cover, with pockets of intense thunderstorm activity over the southeast Bay of Bengal. The system originated as a low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 29.

It subsequently moved west-northwestwards towards the southeast Bay of Bengal. According to the IMD's latest forecast, the system is likely to concentrate into a depression around October 31, and is then expected to continue moving west-northwestwards towards the Andhra Pradesh coast over the following two days.A depression is a stronger stage of a weather system than a low-pressure area, with more organised winds and thunderstorms. However, the latest satellite bulletin has identified a vortex and does not confirm that the system has officially become a depression.EAST COAST IN FOR ANOTHER RAIN SPELLThe developing system is expected to influence weather conditions over the Andaman Sea and parts of the Bay of Bengal over the coming days. The IMD's sea-area forecast indicates widespread rain and thunderstorms over the South Andaman Sea, with isolated heavy spells.

Similar activity is expected over the North Andaman Sea. Satellite image highlights the brewing weather system in the Bay of Bengal.

Along the Andhra Pradesh coast, scattered rain and thunderstorms are forecast, with winds strengthening during thunderstorms. The latest coastal bulletin, however, carried no port warnings or storm-surge advisories. While Arnab's remnants continue to weaken over land, the new system over the Bay of Bengal is still developing, and its eventual strength and movement will become clearer as the IMD receives further satellite and weather observations.- Ends
