Coimbatore Corporation has adopted three policies and guidelines aimed at improving road safety and promoting sustainable urban mobility, according to a Corporation statement. The three documents are the Coimbatore Complete Streets Policy, Comprehensive Road and Street Design Guidelines, and Parking Policy. They were developed with technical support from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) India. The Complete Streets Policy provides a framework for integrating walking, cycling, public transport, road safety, accessibility and climate-resilient planning into the city’s future transport and infrastructure investments. The road and street design guidelines will help standardise the planning, design and implementation of streets, ensuring that space is allocated for pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and motor vehicles based on local requirements. The Parking Policy provides a framework for managing on-street and public parking through pricing, zone-based regulation and enforcement.

It also envisages using parking revenue to improve road and urban mobility infrastructure. The policies will guide the development of continuous footpaths, improved junctions, regulated street vending, accessible public transport facilities, green infrastructure and organised parking. These measures are intended to improve road safety and accessibility, strengthen climate resilience and encourage walking, cycling and public transport, the statement said.
