49, accusing the judge of undermining the dignity of the legal fraternity. In a letter dated October 27 to the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, the association demanded appropriate action and warned that it would boycott the judge’s court if the matter was not addressed. The letter, signed by Bar Association president Dr CP Upadhyay and general secretary Santosh Kumar Mishra, detailed an incident involving a district Superintendent of Police (SP), an Additional Government Advocate (AGA) and a lawyer.ROW OVER A CHAIRAccording to the letter, Justice Bhanot had directed that a separate chair be placed in the row behind the lawyers for police officers or other senior officials appearing in his courtroom.

During proceedings on Tuesday, an SP-rank officer was seated behind the AGA when a lawyer politely asked him to move to the designated seat, saying it was not his place. The AGA allegedly rebuked the lawyer and threatened to complain to the judge when he arrived. After Justice Bhanot entered the courtroom, the AGA raised the issue with him.

The lawyer subsequently apologised to the officer, the letter claimed. The association also alleged that Justice Bhanot mocked senior advocate VP Srivastava, who was present in the courtroom, describing the incident as an insult to the dignity of respected members of the Bar.BAR WARNS OF BOYCOTT In its letter, the association urged the Chief Justice to take serious note of the incident and initiate appropriate action. It warned that failure to do so would leave it with no option but to boycott the court of Justice Bhanot. The letter also questioned the practice of reserving separate seating for certain officials, arguing that if a court could act independently in a manner that humiliated an advocate, lawyers would not hesitate to stand up against what they considered an insult to the court itself. The controversy comes amid claims of a commotion on the High Court premises, with a video purportedly showing the uproar circulating on social media.
