George Scholey completed four puzzle cubes while running a mile in just over five minutes.According to Guinness World Records (GWR), Scholey, who was also known as a speedcubing champion, set the record for the fastest time to complete a puzzle cube mile on October 12.He finished the challenge in 5 minutes and 9.25 seconds at Central Tech High School in Toronto, Canada, despite the windy conditions. The challenge required Scholey to solve a puzzle cube before completing a 400-metre lap of the track.
He repeated the sequence four times, with the final lap slightly longer than the others to ensure he covered the full mile. Scholey, who was from Northamptonshire, England, had already made a name for himself with several unusual records.
His first came in October 2022, when he solved 500 rotating puzzle cubes while skateboarding in a little over 90 minutes.Reflecting on that attempt, he told GWR that he was unsure whether his legs, fingers or brain had taken the biggest beating. Just a month later, he returned to set another record by solving 6,931 rotating puzzle cubes in 24 hours.
According to GWR, he maintained an average of one cube every 12.5 seconds throughout the challenge, with friends helping by feeding him food.In 2024, Scholey took on the London Marathon while solving puzzle cubes and managed to complete 520 during the race. That record was later surpassed by Spain's Toti Moragas Pardell, who solved 561 cubes. His latest attempt came after he discovered the puzzle cube mile category while looking for another record to pursue.
GWR reported that Scholey spent seven weeks preparing for it, working on both his sprinting speed and his ability to solve cubes quickly.During training, he managed to complete a cube in 3.86 seconds and recorded a mile time of 4 minutes and 50 seconds during a relay event. On the day of the attempt, an enthusiastic crowd gathered to watch him take on the challenge. After warming up, Scholey waited for the starting signal before lifting the covering over his first puzzle cube.
He solved it in just nine seconds before racing onto the track. He completed his first lap in 67 seconds. For the second round, he solved another cube in 10.5 seconds and maintained the same lap time.
His third cube took an impressive 8.5 seconds, although his third lap was slightly slower at 70 seconds. For the final round, Scholey solved the cube in 9.5 seconds before setting off on the longest lap of the challenge. GWR explained that the final stretch was 9.344 metres longer than the previous three laps to ensure that he covered the exact mile distance. With spectators cheering him on, Scholey completed the final lap in 68 seconds, bringing his overall time to 5 minutes and 9.25 seconds.
He celebrated by leaping into the arms of his friends and described how he felt afterwards as "absolutely buzzing."Watch the video here:The achievement added another unusual title to Scholey's growing collection, further showcasing his ability to combine speedcubing with athletic challenges.- Ends
