Sahil Wakode's parents have moved the Bombay High Court seeking an independent probe into his death. Their plea alleges caste-based humiliation and demands evidence preservation and witness protection.
The parents of Sahil Wakode, a 20-year-old IIT Bombay student who died by suicide on September 18, have approached the Bombay High Court seeking a fair and independent investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation or a Special Investigation Team, news agency Press Trust of India reported.Ravindra and Sonali Wakode have alleged that their son took his life after facing caste-based humiliation. They have also sought monitoring of the investigation by a retired judge, claiming that the police have not handled the case with the seriousness it merits. The petition, filed through advocate Hitendra Gandhi, is likely to be mentioned before the court on Monday.
Based on the parents' complaint, Powai police had earlier registered a case of abetment of suicide and other offences, PTI reported. The parents have asked the court to direct IIT Bombay to preserve all CCTV footage from September 18. They have also sought steps to ensure that no one influences any student or faculty member who witnessed the events on the day of Sahil's death.
Sahil was a second-year BTech student at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. His parents have alleged that some faculty members and the examination invigilator made casteist remarks against him, following which he took his life.According to the petition, Sahil wanted to hang a portrait of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar after being allotted a room at the institute.
However, his roommates advised him against it, saying he could face caste-based discrimination. When Sahil informed his parents, they also advised him not to hang the portrait to avoid any conflict, the petition said. The plea further alleged that Sahil had faced caste-based remarks from Professor Surayanarayan Doolla, who was also the invigilator during the examination on September 18.The parents have sought an independent, court-monitored investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sahil's death, along with the preservation of evidence and protection of potential witnesses from influence.- Ends
